We have nothing, which has been really hard on my husband and I just for a long while, actually, but the only support we really had in the past was um, my husband’s dad and his wife, and that was only like once every two months, if that. You know, we could have them watch the kids if we needed to, but we’re pretty much on our own. You know, and that’s really hard to know that um, we don’t have anybody to turn to if we need something or if we need help with something, you know.

Beverly and Allison both expressed a sort of reluctance to reach out to people for help, due to combinations of pride and cultural norms, as well as prior bad experiences that led them to be wary. But as illustrated by Wendy’s experience, even when old-timers did reach out, they often struggled to form lasting social ties. In addition to failures to maintain ties to other old-timers, several discussed feeling excluded or rejected in their attempts to reach out to newcomers. Maggie Chambers, a seventy-four-year-old retiree who was considering moving away from the valley, blamed what she referred to as “cliques” of newcomers for her decreasing ability to create and maintain social connections there.
